Blog – Plan – Cool office décor engages and motivates employees

The simple objectives of any business are to maximize productivity, stimulate growth, reduce costs and increase profitability. Whether a small to medium business, a large corporation, or a home office, an overhaul and update of your office design can, believe it or not, help accomplish all of this and more. Very simply, happier people in nicer spaces work harder, longer, are more committed and take greater pride in their work. A comprehensive study conducted by ResearchGate and published in The Journal of Facilities Management concluded, "..improving the quality of the indoor environment improves performance from 5 to 15%."

Simple Changes That Work

Most people tend to look for more interaction, both in and outside of the workplace. One of the most successful ways to accomplish this is create and diversify open work spaces. Your office design should encourage mobility and a sense of collaboration, rather than isolation. Newer generations of employees crave flexibility and dislike static, nameless work spaces stifle creativity and individuality.

Unencumbered by the wired days of old your employees will seek to interact more, achieve more, work longer, be more productive and efficient and most importantly enjoy a sense of participation that fosters excellence.

Clean Out the Clutter

With most devices, such as printers, keyboards and monitors being wireless these days, make the upgrade and remove the obsolete clutter that inhabits many workstations. Employees should have the liberty to utilize any device, anytime, anywhere. Another popular trend is the inclusion of community work tables, where employees can spontaneously brainstorm, share ideas and feed off one another.  An example of this is NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Team X.  It has consistently reduced the time it takes to complete hundreds of tasks from three to nine months down to a few days, according to Herman Miller Inc., out of Zeeland, Michigan. Face to face interaction is more enjoyable and efficient than e-mail or texting for the most part. The net result is the sum of the parts becomes a greater whole in a shorter time frame.

Clear The Mind

In a similar vein, it is proven that a casual space for simple downtime sharpens productivity and heightens energy levels. A private or social lounge space such as an employee cafe can be relaxing and rejuvenating, making for a happier and more highly motivated worker. Another benefit of a communal space is that people from different departments get to mingle and get to know each other’s roles and responsibilities better.

Let In the Light

Another aspect of a creative and charged environment is the introduction of natural light, color and in some cases natural elements, such as real plants or wood enhancements. The variety of tactile sensations can create a less sterile environment, which fosters a more comfortable environment. When people feel at home they are more likely to take greater responsibility according to the Journal of Business, Economics and Finance.

Home Office

All of the above is true for the home office as well. Gone are the days of an old desk in a corner of the basement. With more and more people telecommuting or self-employed, your home workspace should share all the characteristics of a motivating, energized and comfortable environment. The first step to being a professional is acting like one and your home office should foster that same sense of organization, accomplishment and achievement. These specific changes can help transform a home into an office to make it feel more professional.

Whether a business with multiple employees or an individual working from home, the nature of the work environment has changed, office culture has changed, the technology has changed and employees’ expectations have changed.

So, tear down the walls, open the blinds, get out the paint brush and make the investment in the quality of work life your employees deserve. The returns will be rapid and tangible. You might even find you enjoy going to work more too.
